so ... thatとcan・cannotの文へ言い換えよう
このレッスンの役割と目標
前のレッスンではfor＋人で行動者を明示しました。今回はtoo ... toとenough toを、so ... that＋主語＋can・cannotへ言い換えます。
目標は、tooの不可能をcannot、enoughの可能をcanへ対応させ、thatの後ろへ主語を補えることです。次は文脈からtoo・enoughを選び誤文を直します。
おすすめの学び方
先にto以下の結果が可能か不可能かを判定します。次に行動者をthatの後ろの主語として戻し、canかcannotを選びます。
短い形から節へ広げる
too ... toはcannot
The box is too heavy for me to carry.
The box is so heavy that I cannot carry it.
to不定詞ではboxがcarryの対象として省かれています。that節では目的語itを戻します。
enough toはcan
The boy is tall enough to reach the shelf.
The boy is so tall that he can reach the shelf.
行動者the boyをheとしてthat節へ入れます。
例題：順に書き換える
The tea is too hot for us to drink.
- tooなのでcannot
- 行動者usを主格weへ
- teaを目的語itとして戻す
The tea is so hot that we cannot drink it.
よくある間違い
tooの言い換えでcanを使わないでください。不可能なのでcannotです。
thatの後ろに主語を落とさないでください。that cannot drinkでは誰が飲めないか不明です。
forの後ろの目的格meを、that節では主格Iへ変えます。
