最上級を比較級＋any otherへ言い換えよう
このレッスンの役割と目標
前のレッスンでは二者の大小関係を言い換えました。今回は、三つ以上の中で最上位である事実を、一対一の比較を集めた形へ言い換えます。
目標は、A is the 最上級 in/of 範囲を、A is 比較級 than any other＋単数名詞 in/of 範囲へ、比較範囲を保って直せることです。
おすすめの学び方
語順だけを覚えず、最上位Aから「ほかの一つ一つ」へ矢印を引いてください。any otherの後ろが単数になる理由が見えます。
一番とは、ほかのどの一つよりも上であること
any other mountainは「ほかのどの山一つを取っても」という見方です。そのため、mountainは単数形になります。
例題：範囲と名詞を保って書き換える
問題：Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan.
- 最上位はMt. Fujiです。
- ものさしは高さなので、比較級はhigherです。
- 比較する集合はmountains in Japanです。
- 富士山自身を除くため、
any other mountainとします。 Mt. Fuji is higher than any other mountain in Japan.となります。
書き換え後も、富士山と「日本にあるほかの山一つ一つ」を比べているため、元の意味を保っています。
otherが必要な理由
Mt. Fuji is higher than any mountain in Japan.では、any mountainの中に富士山自身も含まれます。自分自身より高いという矛盾を避けるため、otherで最上位の対象を除きます。

よくある間違い
any other mountainsと複数形にしないでください。ここでは、ほかの一つ一つと順に比較するので単数名詞です。
また、元のin Japanやof the threeを落とすと、世界中や別の集合まで比較対象が広がり、同じ事実ではなくなります。
自分で確かめよう
確認1：Ken is the tallest student in his class.を書き換えてください。
`Ken is taller than any other student in his class.`です。確認2：This book is the most interesting book of the five.を書き換えてください。
`This book is more interesting than any other book of the five.`です。確認3：any otherの後ろが単数名詞になる理由を説明してください。
同じ範囲内の「ほかの一つ一つ」を取り出し、最上位の対象と一対一で比較するからです。確認4：Mt. A is higher than any mountain in this town.の問題点は何ですか。
any mountainにMt. A自身が含まれます。`any other mountain`として自分自身を除きます。まとめと次の一歩
最上級は、最上位の対象が同じ範囲のany other＋単数名詞より比較級の程度が大きい形へ言い換えられます。otherと比較範囲を忘れないでください。
次は同じ最上位を、「ほかには同じ程度のものがない」というNo other ... as ... asで表します。
