you・we・theyと複数にはwereを選ぼう
このレッスンの役割と目標
前のレッスンでは、Iと一人・一つにwasを選びました。今回は、you・we・theyと複数の主語にwereを選びます。
目標は、主語の中心が複数かどうかを見抜き、wereを使った過去の肯定文を作れることです。youは一人を指す場合でもwereを使います。
areを使う主語は過去でwere

現在でareを使う主語は、過去でwereになると考えると整理できます。
複数の中心からwereへ
例題：説明部分に引かれない
The students in the classroom ( was / were ) quiet.
主語の中心studentsは複数です。classroomが単数でも、それは場所の説明です。
The students in the classroom were quiet.
wasとwereを並べて比較する
The student was tired.
The students were tired.
student一人ならwas、students複数ならwereです。語尾の-sも数を見分ける手がかりになります。
よくある間違い
You was busy.とする間違いは、youが一人を指す場面で起こります。しかしyouは、現在ではare、過去ではwereを使います。
The books on the desk was old.では、deskに引かれています。主語の中心booksが複数なのでwere oldです。

確認1：You ( was / were ) at the station.はどちらですか。
wereです。youには人数にかかわらずwereを使います。確認2：My parents ( was / were ) busy yesterday.はどちらですか。
wereです。parentsは複数です。確認3：The pictures on the wall was beautiful.を直してください。
The pictures on the wall were beautiful.です。主語の中心picturesは複数です。まとめと次の一歩
you・we・theyと複数の主語にはwereを使います。長い主語でも中心語の数を見て、wasとwereを選びます。
